âIâll get the receptionist to come and take your details,â Rachel said as she wheeled Jordan into a cubicle. âLetâs get you into a gown.â
It was indeed a nasty fracture, and he was given an IV and analgesics before they even tried to get him up onto a trolley.
When Jordan was finally comfortable Ross came in and examined him. âHow soon can we get him up for an X-ray?â he asked.
âWeâve got two portable chests waiting, and an urgent C-spine,â Zaima responded.
And whatever else had come in in the meantime.
âI can take him,â Dominic offered, as he came in and took a seat on a stool at the nursesâ station.
Rachel shook her head. âHe needs a nurse with him, given heâs had analgesics.â
âIâm sure I can manageâand, no, before you ask, I havenât been drinking.â
âItâs policy,â Zaima said.
And policy would be adhered toâeven if sitting on the hard chairs outside X-Ray an hour later with Dominic was the last place she wanted to be.
âHow long will we be here?â Dominic asked.
âAs long as it takes,â Rachel said.
He looked over to Jordan, who, thanks to the analgesics, was comfortable and fast asleep. She went over and checked the pulse in the arm affected by the fracture.
Jordan stirred and opened his eyes. âIâm really sorry.â
âJordan, itâs fine,â Rachel said, and gave him the latest update. âHeatherâs sorting out a babysitter and is on her way.â
But that only served to distress him.
âNo, no...â Jordan said.
âThey couldnât get a babysitter for tonight.â Dominic didnât exactly whisper, but he said it in low tones for Rachelâs ears and then addressed Jordan. âIâll call Heather now and tell her that Iâll stay with you.â
âWill you tell her that youâll drive me home?â
âLetâs see what the X-rays show,â Dominic answered carefully, because he was already certain that Jordan was going to be headed for Theatre, rather than home. âIâll call her now.â
âThanks,â Jordan said. âHeâs a good friend,â he told Rachel, and then tried to focus on her. His eyes, thanks to all the morphine, were little pinpoints. âHe made a terrible husband, Iâll bet, but heâs a good friend.â
âTry and get some sleep,â Rachel said gently, impressing herself with how calm and gentle she kept her voice.
She gave him a nice smile as he closed his eyes and fell asleep.
âGood God!â she said to Dominic as he returned from calling Heather. âDid you go into the doctorsâ mess with a megaphone and tell them all your ex-wife was working in the Emergency Department?â
Dominic had the audacity to laugh. âPeople talk, Rachel.â
âWell, I donât.â
âNormal people, then. Look, Jordanâs the most discreet personâhonestly, Rachel. He knows me from way back. We went to med school together.â
âWell, when heâs sobered up, would you please remind your friend that I donât want this getting out?â
She was cross, but Dominicâs laughter was infectious, and she found that she was smiling and feeling just a little bit warm on the inside. Their marriage had mattered enough to Dominic that heâd had to share it with his friend.
